PERCENTILE

INTRODUCTION

The percentile is a number that reflects the position, in terms of percentile rank, that an EPD or a genetic index is in for the animal’s breed or breed group. It allows a comparison of an animal performance to those of all animals of the same breed, or breed group, which have been evaluated in GenOvis. For example, an animal with an 80th percentile for one trait indicates that 80% of animals within that breed are inferior to it for that particular trait whilst 20% are superior.

HOW IT WORKS?

50% is the average of the breed

<50% means the performance is below the average of the breed

>50% means the performance is above the average of the breed

90% + means the top animals of the breed

HOW TO USE PERCENTILE VALUE?

On the performance certificate, it is easy to determinate if an animal is above or below the average of the breed for the genetic indexes. The graphs with EPDs is based on the same principle.

  • When index bar is located on the left side of the graph, the animal is below the average of the breed for that specific genetic index.
  • When index bar is located on the right side of the graph, the animal is above the average of the breed for that specific genetic index.

GRAPH MEANING

This animal is close to the average of the breed for the GAIN index.

It is better than the average of the breed for the CARC, MAT and MAT-U indexes.

It is below than the average of the breed for the MAT-HP and MAT-UHP indexes.

In a genetic point of view:

  • If you are looking for a terminal breed, this animal is improver for growth and carass traits.
  • If you are looking for improving maternal traits and lamb growth, this animal is improver for those traits.
  • If you are looking for increasing the number born per ewe, this animal shouldn’t be selected.

IMPROVER ANIMALS (50% – 89%)

Animals having percentile above the average of the breed will bring genetic progress.

GAIN 77%: this animal will improve lamb growth.

TOP ANIMALS (90% +)

Animals with higher percentiles will bring QUICKER genetic progress.

GAIN 92%: this animal will bring QUICKER genetic progress for lamb growth.

WHAT IS THE ANIMAL DISTRIBUTION WITHIN PERCENTILE RANKING?

We attemp that the most of the animals within a breed will be close to the average of the breed (50%) and they should have less animals at the bottom of the breed (1%) and at the top of the breed (99%)
