TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

To ensure the GenOvis system is technically correct and as up to date as resources allow.

WE ARE THANKFUL TO CGIL GENETICIST AND COMPUTING TEAM FOR THE CREATION OF GENOVIS

LARRY SCHAEFFER

World-renowned Geneticist

CGIL

Technical advisor on genetic evaluation methods and programs. Dr. Schaeffer has developped the EPDs calculation module.

BILL SZKOTNICKI

Manager IT and Computing

CGIL

Bill was a software and web application developer and he managed the server and systems at CGIl where the database is stored and where weekly sheep evaluation runs are executed. He collaborated with the group to develop and improve the SWA web application and various other programs. He was also involved in developing new strategies as the need arised.

CGIL SHEEP RESEARCH TEAM

ANGELA CANOVA

Assistant Professor

CGIL

Dr Canova is specialized in molecular genetics and cellular biology combined with the Systems Biology and bioinformatics. She has developed extensive statistical and bioinformatics skills and a solid knowledge base in Next Generation Sequencing and animal Systems Biology in beef cattle and other livestock species.

LUIZ BRITO

Postdoctoral Researcher

CGIL

Dr. Luiz Brito has a M.Sc. from the Federal University of Viçosa (Brazil) and a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph (Canada) with both degrees in the area of Genetics and Genomics of Small Ruminants. He is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at CGIL (University of Guelph) and is interested in a broad range of research areas such as quantitive genetics, genomics and systems biology applied to a variety of traits of interest for livestock species. He is very passionate about small ruminants’ production and has worked in the area for over a decade, including international experience such as at INRA (France), AgResearch (New Zealand) and CSIRO (Australia). His current research projects in the area of small ruminants are looking at novel methodologies and strategic approaches to genetically select sheep and dairy goats for improved production efficiency and environmental resilience.

AROA SUAREZ-VEGA

Postdoctoral Researcher

CGIL

Dr Aroa Suarez-Vega completed her Ph.D. in Animal Production and Genetics at Universtity of Leon (Spain) working in studying the genetic basic of health and dairy traits in Spanish sheep breeds using genomic tools. Her work at GenOvis will be focused in the application of “omics” technologies to identify and characterize the effect of key regulatory genes on importants economically traits in the Canadian sheep industry.
