GenOvis Recognition Awards

Objective:

To recognize breeders who believe in the GenOvis genetic evaluation program and who actively contribute to its proper function.

Awardees:

Purebred Awards are determined based on a combination of five criteria and the Productivity Award is determined by the ewes’ productivity.

Purebred terminal, maternal and prolific breed Recognition Awards

To be eligible

  • Breeders must be registered in GenOvis
  • Evaluate at least 20 purebred lambs of terminal, maternal or prolific breeds having 50 and 100 day weights within the eligible time period (12 months)
  • Have paid their annual contribution to the GenOvis genetic development fund

Criteria

Winners are determined based on the weighting of the placements within the five criteria.

  • Genetic Selection Index (weighting 20%)
  • Diffusion Rate (weighting 20%)
  • Evaluated Animal Percentage (weighting 20%)
  • Average Ram Age at Lambing (weighting 20%)
  • Number of Different Rams Used (weighting 20%)

Eligible 12-month time frame

August 1st to July 31

Crossbred Productivity Award

F1 and commercial ewes

To be eligible

  • Breeders must be registered in GenOvis
  • Produce a minimum of 250 F1/commercial lambs (weighed at 50 and 100 days) within the eligible 12-month timeframe
  • Only lambs sired by purebred rams are eligible
  • Have paid their annual contribution to the GenOvis genetic development fund

Considered Criterion:

Winner is determined by the ewes’ productivity. Productivity is defined as the average 50d weights of F1/commercial litters produced within the considered year.

August 1st to July 31

All Canada Sheep Classic GenOvis Award

The GenOvis Award would promote animals evaluated on the sheep genetic program that also have a good conformation.

Requirements:

  • Breeders must be enrolled in the GenOvis program for the current year
  • Animal must be evaluated on GenOvis

Criteria:

  • 60 points are given according to the genetic value of the animal
    • Terminal breeds: based on CARC
    • Maternal breeds: based on MAT-HP
    • Prolific breeds: based on MAT
  • 40 points are given according to the animal conformation

Breed Champion:

Within each breed, the best ewe and the best ram will receive the Champion certificate.

Terminal, maternal and prolific breeds Grand Champion

Within each of the following categories, the best animal will be named Grand Champion:

  • Terminal Breed (CARC index)
  • Maternal Breed (MAT-HP index)
  • Prolific Breed (MAT index)

Among the champions of each breed, the animal, with the higher percentile for the index related to the category, will win. If two animals have the same percentile, the one with the higher index value will win.

GenOvis Excellence (Quebec only)

The GenOvis Excellence aims to recognize purebred flocks and animals that highly contributed to genetic progress and purebred Quebec breeders doing good genetic selection work.
