GENETIC GAIN

Breeders can use some strategies to increase genetic gain. The genetic gain is determined by 4 factors. Any change done on these factors will have an impact on the genetic gain.

SELECTION INTENSITY

The selection intensity is your threshold of genetic selection.

The recommendations are:

Females: TOP 40

Males: TOP 10

VARIATION

5 KEYS OF VARIATION

  • Standard deviation of BVs (each trait and breed)
  • Inbreeding management
  • Population size and genetic exchange
  • Genetic importation
  • Consideration of molecular genetic (ex: Scrapie genotypes)

ACCURACY

  • Data quality of traits measured on animals

Data quality is often underestimated by breeders. It is the basis of a good genetic evaluation, and you should be meticulous when recording data into GenOvis.

  • Uniform and controlled environment (no preferential treatment)
  • Information on relatives and number of progeny

GENERATION INTERVAL

Generation interval is the average age of parents at birth of their progeny.

Younger the parents are

Smaller the generation interval will be

Better will be the genetic gain
