SELECTION INTENSITY

THE SELECTION INTENSITY IS YOUR THRESHOLD OF GENETIC SELECTION.

AIM TO SELECT:

Females: TOP 40

Males: TOP 10

THRESHOLD GRAPH MEANING

SOME EXAMPLES OF SELETION THRESHOLDS

If you select animals close to the average of the breed, your genetic gain will be low, but if you select top animals (animals with higher genetic merit), you will increase quickly your genetic gain.

Females Selection

  • 100 ewes flock
  • average of 2 lambs born per year
  • 200 lambs per year (100 males and 100 females)
  • Selection on TOP 40: keep 20 ewe-lambs for replacement

Males Selection

  • 100 ewes flock
  • average of 2 lambs born per year
  • 200 lambs per year (100 males and 100 females)
  • Selection on TOP 10: keep 5 ram-lambs for replacement

A first selection is done on animals conformation (top 50% animals based on conformation)

A second selection is done on animals breeding values (top 40% for the females and top 10% for the rams)

HIGHER SELECTION INTENSITY =  BETTER GENETIC GAIN
